The world we live in is more and more dependent on technology. Most of our basic day-to-day infrastructure operates on mobile or online apps from banking to communication. It means that understanding technology is required by a larger group of people than before.
You don't have to become a full-time programmer yourself. But when a more diverse group of people understand how technology works and what is possible, the better applications of technology we can build in the society to benefit everyone.
This week we hosted a Codebar workshop at our Helsinki office. And it was a blast! Codebar is a non-profit that connects experienced developers with beginners from groups that are underrepresented in the software industry in evening-long workshops.
In the afternoon Futucafe started filling up with enthusiastic learners. After food, drinks and getting to know each other, it was time to open the laptops and dive into the wonderful world of programming. Each coach had a couple of students and a common topic or tutorial to work on.
With almost 30 students and a dozen coaches Futucafe was filled with discussion, subtle sounds of keyboard clicking and occasional joyous voices of realization when learning new things.
While nobody learns programming in a 3-hour workshop, the start of building a community and getting to know people in similar situation as well as more experienced coaches willing to help goes a long way. We finished the night with a #FridayHug - one of my personal favorite things in the developer community.
Thanks to Codebar for letting us host a workshop and all the incredible coaches who gave their time on Monday evening helping new people get excited about technology. And thanks for all the participants who joined us today, we hope to see you in the future — maybe even joining us as developers!
